Jobless rate rises to 26-year high, By Lucia Mutikani

Friday, September 4th, 2009

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. job losses were the smallest in a year last month, but the unemployment rate unexpectedly jumped to a 26-year high, according to data on Friday that showed the labor market limping toward health.

The Labor Department said the jobless rate climbed to 9.7 percent in August, the highest since June 1983. The increase suggests consumer spending will remain weak and impede the economy’s recovery from the worst recession in seven decades.

Employers cut 216,000 jobs, the smallest since August 2008, but payroll losses in June and July were 49,000 more than initially estimated, the department said.

“Things are much better than they were six months ago, but the patient is still somewhat sick and on the road to recovery. The recession ended probably somewhere around June, but the recovery is going to be muted,” said Jack Bauer, a senior economist at Manning & Napier in Rochester, New York.

Analysts had expected non-farm employers to cut 225,000 workers from their payrolls in August and had looked for the unemployment rate to rise to only 9.5 percent after dipping to 9.4 percent in July.

U.S. stocks initially fell as investors took a dim view at the surge in the unemployment rate. But by midday, the three major U.S. stock indexes were up about 1 percent as the focus turned to the smaller-than-expected decline in employment. U.S. government bond prices fell on the hint of steady economic improvement.

“The trajectory is in the right direction,” White House economic adviser Christina Romer told CNBC television.

While the economy appears to have pulled out of the recession it fell into in December 2007, unemployment is expected to continue to mount for the next several months.

The jobless rate in August was partially lifted by the return to the labor force of some jobless workers who had given up looking for work, but the main cause was a big drop in employment.

A gauge of labor market slack that measures both the officially unemployed and discouraged jobseekers rose to a record 16.8 percent in August from 16.3 percent in July.

Since the start of the recession, the economy has shed 6.9 million jobs. The government has rolled out a $787 billion package of spending and tax cuts to rescue the economy.

On Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden said the stimulus package had created or sustained 150,000 jobs in its first 100 days and would add 600,000 more during its second 100 days.

The jobs report confirmed the pace of layoffs had eased from early this year. Nearly three-quarters of a million jobs were lost in January alone.

Manufacturing employment fell 63,000 last month, pushing the total number of factory jobs lost since the start of the recession to 2 million. Construction industry payrolls dropped

65,000 after falling 73,000 in July.

The service-providing sector purged 80,000 workers in August, while goods-producing industries shed 136,000 positions. Education and health services added 52,000 jobs in August after increasing payrolls by 21,000 in July.

“We are on track to break even on jobs by the end of the year and will be producing positive jobs growth in the first part of … 2010,” said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors in New York.

Still, Orlando cautioned that consumer spending, which normally accounts for about two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, was likely to be sluggish for some time.

“The consumer is going to lag. The pieces that are going to drive this recovery are strong overseas growth, the weak dollar and export growth, which is going to drive a sharp inventory growth commencing this quarter.”

The length of the average workweek, which closely correlates with overall output and gives clues on when firms will start hiring, held steady at 33.1 hours in August.

Average hourly earnings rose to $18.65 in August from $18.59 in July. It was the fourth straight monthly gain, reflecting an increase in the legal minimum wage.

Skydiver survives 10,000ft fall to the ground….

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

A skydiver had a remarkable escape after surviving a 10,000ft plunge to the ground when his parachute failed to open.

Skydiver survives 10,000ft fall to the ground

Paul Lewis was rescued by firefighters and treated for head and neck injuries

Paul Lewis, 40, jumped from a plane and plummeted through the air before crashing on to the roof of a hangar at Tilstock Airfield in Whitchurch, Shropshire.

He was rescued by firefighters and treated for head and neck injuries, before being airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, in Stoke-on-Trent.

The accident happened at around 3pm on Friday when Mr Lewis, a freelance cameraman, was filming tandem jumps for the Parachute Centre, a skydiving firm based at the airfield.

Witnesses said that his main parachute failed to open, and then his reserve parachute failed to work properly.

A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “The man is reported to have fallen approximately 1,000 feet (3,000 metres), spiralling to the ground following a 10,000-foot skydive.”

Colin Fitzmorris, who owns the Parachute Centre, said that Mr Lewis was “very lucky” to escape without more serious injuries, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Mr Fitzmorris, who saw the accident happen, said: “He had a malfunction on his main parachute, which he cut away normally, but had some kind of control problem on his reserve which continued to spiral until he hit the hangar roof.

“The roof of the hangar broke his fall and flexed sufficiently to reduce the impact. He has no fractures but some neck injury, and we are sure that he will make a full recovery. He is very lucky.”

Tracey Butterworth, a care worker from Leek, Staffordshire, who performed a tandem jump videoed by Mr Lewis last month, said: “He’s a fantastic bloke – he and the other instructor made the day for me.

“He was making me laugh from start to finish, and always very professional. It sounds like he’s been very, very lucky and I’m glad to hear he’s OK.”

On his Facebook site, Mr Lewis, who is thought to live in Shropshire, lists his interests as skydiving; the pop band My Left Foot; the television sit-com Father Ted; and Peter Griffin, the character from the animated television series Family Guy.

In 2007, experienced parachutist Michael Holmes survived after his main canopy and reserve failed to open after a 12,000ft jump.

Triggered at 4,000ft above Lake Taupo, New Zealand, the malfunction was caught in a gut-wrenching video sequence by his head-mounted camera.

Mr Holmes, from Jersey, had his fall broken by a tree. He suffered only a punctured lung and a broken ankle.

The person to have fallen the greatest distance without a parachute, and survived, is Vesna Vulović, a Serbian air hostess who fell 33,000ft after her JAT airliner was blown up in January 1972.

The 22-year-old landed in snow in the former Czechoslovakia.

Let Me Tell You Once You Have An Accident of This Caliber It Does Change your Life.

These events happen alot, I remember when I first when Skydiving it was scary and life changing all at the same time. But when you feel the air hitting your face and feel free as if you are flying it is a real adreline rush, but when your parachute does not open you panick a little but you have that reserve parachute but if you are having problems with that as well. It scares you and causes you to freakout and causes you to free and panick like there is no tomorrow, but once it opens you still do not feel safe until you hit the ground again and you feel thankful to be alive.

People who get up everyday and continue to go back and jump they are fearless, although it definitely is a lot of fun, it is scary and causes you to really think about your life a whole lot more.

This gentlemen in the above article is simply lucky to be alive and thank goodness that he is ok and will fully recover but this is not always the case. This is trully a life changing event and must be taken into consideration and he is still in high spirits.

This is one awesome guy and I look forward to hearing more news about this, I was sent this link from a friend on facebook Martyn Haskins  unbelievable and must be take into consideration when you can walk away from this kind of event with minor injuries.

Wow, Here I am on early in the morning just reviewing a few things and this article is dropped on my facebook page, I simply had to read it, wow over the weekend I have watched and reviewed quite a few things.

Some of the stuff has been about a blind individual who is making tons of money online and he’s blind, now that a life inspiring event. Also a little about spirituality and also some about financial literacy and taking daily action towards your dreams.

What inspires you to take action and to wake up everyday satisfied, if you say nothing revise your plans, create a vision board and workout your dream plans, you lifestyle design.

Enjoy your weekend.

All the best,

There will be some major changes and Makeovers coming to Julio R Mattos Soon

Over the next coming few weeks, we will work to actually make this site a more friendlier and more resource oriented and helpful site for our visitors and our friends.

I know that we have been a little stagnant on offering helpful Articles and resources over the past several months and with great reason. We have been working out our new systems, plans, software and products by integrating new technology and the power of the New Web 2.0 or Web 3.0, which is soon to come into our plans and into Mission’s Crusade.

We are all looking for ways to help elevate our lives and to make ourselves useful, for some we loose ourselves sometimes in developing new products and services and we seem to forget the basics and the reasons we start business in the first place.

Whether or not You know it or not, working in your business and Building and Growing Your Business requires a lot more then merely you working to get everything done yourself.

You have to understand that you will need to Build Yourself a Team,  now part of your team you can a lot of Technology to help in that part of your business, but without your personal touch and a live team, your business is trully Limited. Also not to mention that having a Mentor is also a key business move and very helpful personal move in your Business Vision and as well your Personal Vision for what you want from your business.

I recently have gone back over my plans and also my business plans and what I want from my business and what I desire to offer my Customers and using systems to help guide me through that process and doing a company makeover one fundamental step at a time.

So please look out here and a few other resources for something for passionate Entrepreneurs making differences every day. Also you will be provided the some critical information, resources and products and services to help you and your business grow.

Not to Mention that will be Joint Venturing with other Entrepreneurs over the next 6-36 months to really make some big moves and changes in both our personal lives and business lives altogether.

I hope you will be patient and ride the wave of the Entrepreneur Journey that will surely come and also be prepared For Change, without a Focused Mindset and a plan, Vision, Mission, Systems in Place you are limiting yourself to the basics, but with use of all of these you will be able to create a new window in your business that will be like the ocean overflowing with salt.

I hope you are having a fantastic weekend and I look forward to hearing from you and also working with you and getting to know you over the coming next few years.

All the best,

Julio R. Mattos

Happy Good Friday

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Happy Good Friday

So I woke up this morning feeling inspired and I do not know if it has to do with the weather or whether I slept very well last night, well I actually slept 4 hours but still it was the best.

I felt like writing early this morning and so I did, I will deliver a few of things I wrote over the next couple days.

Today I began reviewing my Mass Control 2.0 Course and was going through some of the notes. I found myself jumping from that after about an hour or so, back into reviewing 4 Hour Work Week and recently received an email about the 4 hour Work Month.

Funny how sometimes you review things and find yourself jumping from task to task and always tell yourself you getting things done. Well do you really get things done?

I really do wonder about that sometimes, considering that me, myself I am lazy but productive at times and other times I procrastinate. I find myself lately really thinking am I where want to be at in my life and of course the answer is very immediate, no I am NOT.

The next question am I Happy? Yes, I am happy.

 What am I happy about?

This question could be a number of things and is always asked to me because I am always in good spirits, at least that’s what everyone believes. I am happy to be alive, healthy, able to enjoy myself at times and educate myself, network with some good people in the world and always meeting new people.

I am motivated about a lot of different things, will not get into that at this moment and time.

But just realize if you have passions, focus, vision, willing to invest in yourself and patience and also the willingness to work with others, things will help motivate you as well.

Enjoy your Good Friday, may you spend however you like, either with your family, your friends and or significant other. Call them to say hello if you are not around them. I always call my family at least twice a week.

Well until my next post.

All the best,

Julio R. Mattos

Billionaire Clusters

Billionaire Clusters

by Duncan Greenberg
Wednesday, April 1, 2009
provided by

Want to become a billionaire? Up your chances by dropping out of college, working at Goldman Sachs or joining Skull & Bones.

Are billionaires born or made? What are the common attributes among the uber-wealthy? Are there any true secrets of the self-made?

More from

• In Depth: Billionaire Clusters

• The 2009 Billionaire List

• The Next Billionaire Boom

We get these questions a lot, and decided it was time to go beyond the broad answers of smarts, ambition and luck by sorting through our database of wealthy individuals in search of bona fide trends. We analyzed everything from the billionaires’ parents’ professions to where they went to school, their track records in the early stages of their careers and other experiences that may have put them on the path to extreme wealth.

Our admittedly unscientific study of the 657 self-made billionaires we counted in February for our list of the World’s Billionaires yielded some interesting results.

First, a significant percentage of billionaires had parents with a high aptitude for math. The ability to crunch numbers is crucial to becoming a billionaire, and mathematical prowess is hereditary. Some of the most common professions among the parents of American billionaires (for whom we could find the information) were engineer, accountant and small-business owner.

Consistent with the rest of the population, more American billionaires were born in the fall than in any other season. However, relatively few billionaires were born in December, traditionally the month with the eighth highest birth rate. This anomaly holds true among billionaires in the U.S. and abroad.

More than 20% of the 292 of the self-made American billionaires on the most recent list of the World’s Billionaires have either never started or never completed college. This is especially true of those destined for careers as technology entrepreneurs: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Larry Ellison, and Theodore Waitt.

Billionaires who derive their fortunes from finance make up one of the most highly educated sub-groups: More than 55% of them have graduate degrees. Nearly 90% of those with M.B.A.s obtained their master’s degree from one of three Ivy League schools: Harvard, Columbia or U. Penn’s Wharton School of Business.

Goldman Sachs has attracted a large share of hungry minds that went on to garner 10-figure fortunes. At least 11 current and recent billionaire financiers worked at Goldman early in their careers, including Edward Lampert, Daniel Och, Tom Steyer and Richard Perry.

Several billionaires suffered a bitter professional setback early in their careers that heightened their fear of failure. Pharmaceutical tycoon R.J. Kirk’s first venture was a flop–an experience he regrets but appreciates. “Failure early on is a necessary condition for success, though not a sufficient one,” he told Forbes in 2007.

According to a statement read by Phil Falcone during a congressional hearing in November, his botched buyout of a company in Newark in the early 1990s taught him “several valuable lessons that have had a profound impact upon my success as a hedge fund manager.”

Several current and former billionaires rounded out their Yale careers as members of Skull and Bones, the secret society portrayed with enigmatic relish by Hollywood in movies like The Skulls and W. Among those who were inducted: investor Edward Lampert, Blackstone co-founder Steven Schwarzman, and FedEx founder Frederick Smith.

Parents Had Math-Related Careers

The ability to crunch numbers is normally a key to becoming a billionaire. Often, mathematical prowess is hereditary. Some of the most common professions among the parents of American billionaires for whom we could find that information were engineer, accountant and small-business owner.

September Birthdays

Of the 380 self-made American tycoons who have appeared on the Forbes list of the World’s Billionaires in the past three years, 42 were born in September–more than in any other month. Maybe that’s because September is the month the Forbes list of the 400 richest Americans is published.

Tech Titans Who Dropped Out of College

Forget everything your guidance counselor told you: You don’t have to go to college to be successful. More than 20% of the self-made American moguls on the most recent list of the World’s Billionaires never finished college. Many of them made their fortunes in tech. Among them: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Larry Ellison, (Oracle) and Theodore Waitt (Gateway).

Skull and Bones

Several current and former billionaires rounded out their Yale careers as members of Skull and Bones, the secret society portrayed with enigmatic relish by Hollywood in movies like The Skulls and W. Among those who were inducted: investor Edward Lampert, Blackstone co-founder Steven Schwarzman and FedEx founder Frederick Smith.

Goldman Sachs

A stint at investment bank Goldman Sachs is a prime credential for becoming a finance billionaire. Of the 68 self-made American billionaires that derive their fortunes from finance, at least eight cut their teeth in Goldman’s investment banking, trading, or asset management divisions. The company’s crown jewel: its “risk arbitrage” unit, which launched the careers of billionaires Edward Lampert and Daniel Och, as well as former billionaires Tom Steyer and Richard
